Suruti Box, Cajun Accordian, Dolak, Dumbeck
The suruti box is a pleasant drone
used primarily in the carnatic
tradition, but seems to have spread
to many other areas. I’ve found
the cajun accordian, with its
diatonic tuning and button keyboard
a fun but challenging instrument —
not exactly non-12, but not exactly
12 tone either. The dumbeck from
middle-eastern tradition, and a small
dolak from hindu tradition, are the
best examples of afforadable hand-drums
and available nearly everywhere these
days. it is a little bit of work and
effort to find and learn a few of the
traditional rhythms, but much less so
than western trap drums.
